I went to the local hospital they didn't allow visitors who weren't family, same for the senior citizen home.
No one in my family is currently sick (serious illness) or dying.

HW 26

  • Just because you have health care doesn't mean your going to be provided full payment of the procedures and medicines needed.
  • They provide universal health care in Canada and France
  • They're are certain requirements to qualify for health care and many "pre existing" can ruin your chances of qualifying
Source : Sicko
The sources that provided me more understanding was the movie, I was able to see what they fail to tell us. The interviews were from both perspectives of people with health care and with out health care in America and also the universal health care in France and Canada. Something I think we could explore further is why is this allowed to happen, what was there reasoning for denying universal health care? Hillary Clinton at one point wanted universal health care but was paid off so she shut up. Since we know these things why isn't anything being done? Even in other topics besides health care, we know whats actually going on and how wrong it is but no one is really trying to stop it. Its sort of easier to allow it to happen.

HW 24

Book- Tuesdays with Morrie
author- Mitch Albom
publisher- Paul Weiss
year published-1977

Precis- Morrie is becoming worse and Mitch is becoming more and more concerned. He feels terrible about Morries death creeping closer. They're meetings become more insightful and Mitch is motivated to change his life styles. This book is becoming repetitive.

“Money is not a substitute for tenderness, and power is not a substitute for tenderness. I can tell you, as I’m sitting here dying, when you need it, neither money nor power will give you the feeling your looking for, no matter how much of it you have.” pg 125

“The truth is you don’t get satisfaction from those things you know what really gives you satisfaction? What? Offering others what you have to give”  pg 126

To be completely honest, this book is getting on my nerves. Yes it's insightful and shows a different view on illness and dying but it's very repetitive. Morrie is saying the same things over and over again, it's a good book but someone wouldn't have to read the whole book to get the point.

HW 23

Book- Tuesdays with Morrie
author- Mitch Albom
publisher- Paul Weiss
year published-1977
Precis-Morrie is becoming worse and Mitch is becoming more and more concerned. He feels terrible about Morries death creeping closer. They're meetings become more insightful and Mitch is motivated to change his life styles.

Quotes- "Morries approach was exactly the opposite. Turn on the faucet. Wash ourself with the emotion. It wont hurt you. It will help you. " pg 105

This is an example of alternatives to dominant practices. A lot of people like to block out the negative and try not to accept it, but he is accepting the negative and kind of embracing it.

"Same for loneliness : you let go, let the tears flow, feel it completely - but eventually be able to say "All right that was my moment with loneliness. I'm not afraid of feeling lonely, but now I'm going to put that loneliness aside and know that there are other emotions in the world, and I'm going to experience them as well." -105

I'm not sure if this is a health way to deal with emotions, yes you allow yourself to feel them but what if the feelings are too intense and you overwhelm yourself.

""We all yearn in some way to return to those days when we were completely taken care of- unconditional love, unconditional attention. Most of us didn't get a enough" pg 116

I agree with this theory we do yearn for love and attention, and we look to things or people to fill in the hole. I think we all do it subconsciously though and some would never admit to it.

This book isn't really showing me anything new, I always knew there was different ways to deal with death and illness, but this book doesn't ignore the pain that people go through during illness and death. Its also showing how to appreciate the things you have or had and to be able to die peacefully knowing you achieved everything you want in your life.

HW 22

Book- Tuesdays with Morrie
author- Mitch Albom
publisher- Paul Weiss
year published-1977

Precis-Mitch is starting to realize how much a positive influence Morrie had on him, sixteen years later he notices Morrie on television talking about his experience with dying. He reconnects with Morrie and they catch up on old times.

"Why are we embarrassed by silence? What comfort do we find in all the noise?"
-I'm really interested in these two questions. When a room is completely quite its awkward and uncomfortable, but once its rowdy and lively and everyone is talking its normal. Its comfortable and I also wonder why that happens.

"You know, Mitch, now that I'm dying, I've become much more interesting to people"
- People become interested with death when the dominat social practices arent followed. When people dont ask for a normal funeral with everyone wearing black they become interesting. When someone finds out they're dying and they take it lightly they become interesting. Just as when we read the article about prostate cancer and the author was basically making fun of it, we as a class called her insensitive and rude.

"I had the coldest realization the our time was running out. And I had to do something"
- I noticed that people only start to really care when someone is dying or died. For example if a relative that you weren't really close to died your still expected to call and morn with the family. The person who died wouldn't have crossed your mind unless they died. It seems like when death occurs people want to turn a new leaf, they  want to do things they never done before travel the world. But they only have motivation when death comes around

The book changed my views on death, I use to think it was a dark sad thing that we cant escape. Morrie's view on death is refreshing, his philosophies are interesting to. Hes happy with the life he lived and is trying to spend his last few moments happy. It also shows me that having insurance doesn't mean anything. Morrie has the best doctors and probably the best medicines but is still dying. There isn't a price tag on life and apparently they're isn't a price tag on death.

HW 21- Expert # 1

Insights/Experiences - "Postive energy", Took them 11 months to fix theyre insurance issue , Didn't go to the doctor when he should of

When she mentioned that they decided to have positive energy and not dwell on the fact that he might die I thought of "Tuesday with Morrie" Morrie also had positive energy and a positive mindset but he accepted the fact that he was going to die. He didn't want to avoid the truth. I think avoiding the truth is easier which is why people tend to lie to themselves. Having postie energy towards a tough situation is a way to cope, and not dwelling on the negative things make people feel better.

When she started speaking about the issue with her insurance company I was shocked, if someone else's life is in danger there's no question about money. He should of been allowed to go straight to the doctors and the company should take care of it themselves. Although we cant escape our death I think that he was able to go to the doctors earlier he would of caught the cancer before it became advance and spread. I think in America everyone is considered a dollar sign and not a human being, I also think money shouldn't be the main focus when it comes to someone's life. Life shouldn't have a price tag.

Beth's presentation didn't spark any questions or further thoughts for me, although her story was sad it was beautiful because she stuck by her husband's side until the end. I'm sure when she went on the blind date with him she didn't expect such a strong relationship to blossom. Her being able to speak so openly about the death of her husband shows her strength and proves that people can get through the lost of a loved one.

HW 19

When I asked my mother about sickness and death; she said that it happens to everyone and there isn't a way to avoid it. Her views on death were more calm then I expected, she didn't sigh or start dwelling on the recent death of her mother. She seems to just accept the fact that one day were all going to die. She is a Jehovah's Witness so she believes that we go to "Sleep" when we die and then after the resurrection the chosen few will rise from the dead and live life on earth. I then asked does she every doubt that that's the truth and she said she has faith in her religion. The conversation then drifted away and eventually I went back into my room, when trying to hold a conversation death and illness is a hard conversation to continue to talk about; eventually everyone starts dwelling on negative things.

Hw 18

My experience of this holiday fit more into the "anti- body" then "body centered" only because no one was focused on the nutrition side of the meal, thanksgiving is an excuse to eat like a pig and not feel to bad about it after wards.

When people get together with they're family they tend to stop caring about what they eat and how much of it, the focus is the family. When my family comes together for thanksgiving we dont focus on the food as much as others, we play games and watch movies and once the food is ready we sit at the table and we eat. I wouldn't say that the food dominated the event but it is the highlight. Once we eat its back to being active, my mother doesn't like it when people sit around after they eat. Some families might exclude certain foods that are apart of the "traditional" thanksgiving meal because diabetes might run in they're family or they're over weight family members.
Some of my uncles and cousins did watch the football game after the meal, but everyone else was socializing. The death of a family member could alter the "anti-body vs body centered" cultural practice a family that usually eats fatty and salty foods that is prone to diabetes might try to change their diets after a love one dies or gets really sick from diabetes. Sometimes it takes sickness and dying for people to start to change their ways.

HW 17

1. Your experience with the topics.

I havent experience too many death experiences, saw a few suicides but never family related so I was extremely affected by it. Illness is something I am very familiar with, many family members of mine are sick and everyone is trying to cope.
2. The way you've been taught to see illness & dying.

Death happens but illness can be prevented. My mom always told me this , you wont get sick if you take care of your self and sickness can be prevented.

3. Social norms around illness & dying in our culture.

"It happens to the best of us" we tend to have pity for the sick and dead. We then decide its time to appreciate that person.

4. Your family's approach to these aspects of life.

they believe that its going to happen eventually but why deal on it, be happy and live your life.

5. Possibly unusual perspectives you have about being sick and/or dying

No, I dont have any unusual perspectives

HW 12 - Final Food Project 2 - Outline

Oversarching Thesis- Many of the normal routines we are accustomed to preforming actually include nightmarish and industrial atrocities that we fail to acknowledge

Major Arg1- What the "normal" routines are and we preform them
Chunk- The fast food restaurants and the targeted customers and the food corp.
Chunk- The "bad" what they fail to tell us and the treatment of the slaughterhouses, where the food comes from, everyone doesn't have enough money to care about the food.
Chunk- The "Romantic" alternative, Michelle Obama, organic foods but the high prices compared to the low prices of unhealthy food. Should be the other way around.
Source- Notes from movie (Food Inc. and FFN)

HW 11 - Final Food Project 1

I changed my diet, I haven't eaten fast food products or ground meat in about five weeks and Ive been drinking organic milk instead of regular. I also printed out lil sheets of paper with information about the food industry and put them on top of the meat in the supermarket. The sheets said "A single portion of hamburger meat bought in most supermarkets isn't from meat ran through a grinder. it is a mixture of various grades of meat from different parts of many cows and even from different slaughterhouses"

HW 7d

Chap. 9

Precis: Address the possibilities of defected meat if it isn't cleaned properly, and  fast food meat is more prone to getting diseases.

Gems/Thoughts-
"She was admitted to the hospital on Christmas Eve, suffered terrible pain, had three heart attacks, and died in her mother's arms on December 28, 1992. She was six years old." Page 199
This reminded me of Kevin's Law and it baffles me that no one is doing anything about it, they just continue to try to sweep it under the rug and pretend everything is ok.

Chap. 10

Precis- "American Realization" more and more people are starting to realize that although fast food is cheap and easy to get its definitely not the healthiest thing to be eating and it leads to obesity and diseases
Gems/Thoughts-
"After almost finishing the book its obvious that McDonald's has more cons then pros, so why do people put so much money, time and effort into it?" - Steph

To response to steph question I think that everyone has money on the brain, from the consumers perspective they want to save money and mcds is cheap fast and convenient. But from the sellers perspective its all about making money, they have target buyers so they chose certain advertisement and propose different deals so that the buyers keep buying. No one has time to care about food.

Epilogue

Precis- Its all up to the buyer, you can chose to continue eating the healthy food in mcds burger king and taco bell or you can walk over the the farmers market and get locally grown food. Its up to you.

Gems/ Thoughts- it is up to us to decide if we want mcds or a homemade meal but I feel like its the food companies responsibility to make sure they food isn't tainted and swimming with disease, poop and urine.

HW 7c

Chapter  7

Precis: This chapter addressed the meat packing industry and the treatment of immigrant workers. The policies, working conditions and the treatment of the workers were a little less then humane.

Gems/Thoughts- I think that its gross that many people know that the workers aren't getting treated well but yet still nothing has been done to stop it.  Most of the time the employers don't record the employees injuries because its going to bring attention to the horrible conditions.

Chapter 8

Precis- This chapter focused on the injuries and conditions of working in a slaughterhouse. Many companies dont like to bring attention to their companies so they dont record injuries that occur during work hours. They hire illegal immigrants so that they are less likely to report them.

Gems/Thoughts- Since most of the workers are usually illegal  immigrants not many people care (sad but true) and hiring illegal immigrants are way cheaper because you can usually pay them below minimum wage. Even though a lot of people know about this they dont do anything about it because its not that important to them, which again proves that most Americans are selfish money hungry pigs.

HW 10

Precis- This film addresses the health issues regarding the food , the we eat today the production of the meat (cows, chicken and pigs) and the cleanliness that missing from the production of the meats. Also speaks about the food industry and the requirements rules and regulations the farmers are given from the food companies. The FDA and the USDA are failing to fix these problems and are ignoring them.

-The movie offers visuals, and since a movie cant be to long or else you'll loose the viewers attention it doesn't have as many details as the book does. Of course reading a book is better then watching a movie but doing both will allow you to fish out the key points and have visuals. You can imagine what the factories and the farms and chicken coops look like when you read about it but once you see it, you know its the truth. "You have to see it to believe it"
- My insights have changed after watching this movie and reading FFN I always knew that the meat that we eat isn't the cleanest but I never really cared. After reading the book and watching the movie Ive changed my eating habits, I no longer eat fast food (going on 5 weeks now) and I don't eat ground beef. I don't think I could ever go full vegetarian but a few changes would be for the better rather then continuing to eat the dirty stuff we call fast food.

HW 9

What intellectual moves serve as the basis of "Freakonomics"? Just as Allen Iverson relied on his crossover dribble to beat bigger and stronger defenders, intellectuals such as the protagonists in "Freakonomics" have a "tool box" of particular ways of looking at the world: figuring out topics, asking questions, finding evidence, and evaluating truth. Please describe the 3-5 "tools" that the film repeatedly shows in use, with an example of a moment from the film for each one.

- They focused on using scenarios, every single opinion or statement had a dramatization added along with it. When they were talking about how the name of a person could effect their lives they showed different outcomes and situations (temptress, loser, winner,) The film wasn't bias either, they showed both opinions and viewpoints but never said which one was "right" or "wrong. An example of this was the debate between the two men being interviewed about the names, they showed both of they're opinions on the matter, switching back and forth to each answer giving during they're interviews.

- They also used statistics for example when they were speaking about the corruption in the sumo wrestling industry they gave examples with statistics and showed actual stories of matches that were discovered to be fixed.

What sources of evidence do the Freakonomics authors most rely on? Why is this innovative?

- They relied on research and statistics and real world examples. When addressing the issues of the outcome of your life based on your name they spoke about, statistics and the percentage of success when you live in the projects vs a nicer area or being raised by your mother and father or just single parenting.
- For the real world examples they showed two students that were apart of the program where they pay students to get good grades, they interview two boys with the same requirements and showed the audience the outcome. Nothing (I hope) was fake it was all real examples

Freakonomics serves as an inspiration and good example to our attempt to explore the "hidden-in-plain-sight" weirdness of dominant social practices.
a. Agree or disagree.
b. Explain why.
c. Use an example or idea from Freakonomics and relate it to our investigation of US foodways.

 a) Agree
b) The movie showed things that happen daily but we just dont realize or want to realize the negative side to it. It showed how oblivious our nation is, we dont question things or try to change things because it isn't the "norm" without even realizing that what were doing or what were letting happen is negative or a contradiction.

c) Paying people to eat right, they already have plenty reality shows and game shows about being fat and winning money after you loose the weight. Relates to paying kids to get good grades

Sprouts!

My uncle owns a farm and eats the food he grows, Ive visited his farm many times so growing the sprouts wasn't to out of the ordinary or fascinating, I'm a tad nervous about eating them since there not expected to taste good.I think that living in the city its harder for people to grow they're own foods and people cant live on sprouts they're whole life, but growing your own food can and will save you a lot of money in the long run. I didn't mind the process, its not that hard to water a plant two times a day, although sometimes I would forget it wasn't a struggle for me.

Reading Response

"Fast Food Nation" By, Eric Schlossen
Chapter 1 and 2

Chapter one is about the growth of the fast food industry and its pioneers, it highlighted the major events that changed the way the industry is ran today. A lot of the creators of fast food restaurants were named such as Carl N. Karcher, Harland Sanders and Glen W. Bell. The time line of their lives and a little bit of their history was included.
A "gem" that I noticed in the book was , "The Golden Arches are now more widely recognized than the Christan cross" I realized that its completely true, there's thousand of McDonald's everywhere worldwide. This book has made me realize the amount of control the fast food industry has over America, we have to eat and not everyone has them time to cook a meal. Fast food is convenient cheap and fast, your able to eat it on the go which is appealing to many.

"Fast Food Nation" By, Eric Schlossen
Chapter 3

A lot of the fast food restaurant's saved money by paying the workers poorly, there was bill called "McDonald's Bill" which allowed them to pay 16 and 17 year old kids half minimum wage.Tried to find any way to cut cost for them such as buying for example Coca Cola syrup and diluting it with water so they only pay .9 cents when they charge over a dollar for a drink.

Gem- Most of the people that steal from fast food restaurants are employees and ex employees, they feel cheated

Chapter 4

Precis -People notice how much the Fast food franchise is making and they're attracted to the money, they invest in the fast food franchise and gain a profit. Since there's so many investments the franchise becomes even more popular

Gems-
"In 1969, Donald and Doris decided to sell jeans like Mcds, Burger King and KFC sold food"
now theyres Gaps all over the world, baby Gap, Gap kids, Gap and Gap Inc

Thoughts-  Years ago all you needed was a good pitch and a reasonable prices and the chances of your business being a success was large but now its very slim because of the competition.

Chapter 5

Precis- Franchises make it harder to be successful when dealing with a private owned business

Gems/Thoughts-  I think its interesting that many of these fast food companies purchase they're food for very cheap prices and sell it at a higher price. For example Mcds buys french fries for 30 cents a pound but sells them for about 6 dollars a pound. Also they buy soda syrup for 9 cents and dilute it with water and charge the public over a dollar. Its all a big scheme

Food Diary

"Why did you pick that food?"

Because I was hungry, and I craved that meal. Sometimes people eat certain things to make a trait about themselves better for example carrots are suppose to make your eyesight better. Or garlic makes you hair and finger nails grow, but I eat when I'm hungry or sometimes bored I dont focus on the calorie count of the affect it'll have on my hair or skin etc. I dont think many people would even pay attention to the calorie count if they were told to be conscious of they're body image. Since I didn't eat that much I dont really have any theories  on the physical aspect of food. But I do believe that their are certain ingredients they put into food (especially  fast food ) that's addicting or at least makes us crave it, because we've all heard about movies such as super size me that show us the long term affects of eating fast food all the time but yet many still eat t. For example when I was eating a hash brown for breakfast I noticed it was greasy, I could even see the grease on my fingertips but I continued to eat it because it tasted good. For the past 48 hours I didn't really eat because I've been feeling sick. Ive been drinking a lot of fluids, but the meals I did eat were

  •  La Yogurt (150 Calories )
  • Mangu( 125 calories), fried salami(175calories), fried cheese(70 calories)
  • Cup(s) of Orange Juice (150 calories per cup)
  • Donut (180calories)
  • Welchs Fruit snack (80 calories)
The Amount of calories I'm suppose to intake daily is 2,393 throughout the 48 hours I had 1,080 I do know that were suppose to intake at least 2,000 a day

Dominant Discourse

Article Read: "Told to Eat Its Vegetables, America Orders French Fries"

I noticed that the topics that are mostly discussed regarding food is the health hazards, what we should or shouldn't eat and the way the animals are treated. Anything else regarding food usually doesn't normally hit the headlines. While I was reading the article I noticed that they didn't have one sided quotes. Of course they included the predictable doctor quotes, but they also included quotes of regular people on the street who disagreed with their article but also gave them more ammo to use against us. For example they quoted a Manhattan resident who said that eating vegetables is "a pain" A nurse who didn't want to be named even said that "vegetables make her gag" ["The New York Times Log In." The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia. Web. 29 Sept. 2010. <http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/25/health/policy/25vegetables.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&emc=eta1>] It just shows that were lazy and even though we know were not doing the right thing we simply just don't care. They also pointed out that in the near future (they think) that organic cucumbers would replace conventionally grown one, and a bag of lettuce would replace a head. After I finished reading this article I felt as though some Americans either don't like vegetables, don't care or just know they should eat them but don't anyway. Regardless of what the article was trying to say I was left with a negative view on Americans which is common when discussing food, were kind of considered as the fat lazy kid that nobody really likes. I dont think this article was a "problem-result" article meaning they didnt point out the problem and then say how we should change it, I think they were just pointing out the issuse. Americans dont eat enough vegetables and here's why, this article was less one sided unlike the articles we usually read or hear about regarding food.

Your Families' Food ways

I think depending on your ethnic background, you prepare, produce or even eat differently. Food may be considered more sacred in one country then it is in another. In America (I think) food isn't really valued as it should be because many believe that it will always be there, there will always be a Mcdonalds and there will always be a Burger King etc. Since many of us don't have to grow and tend to the animals in the farm, many don't know the value and importance in food. I decided to ask strangers how and why do they eat and if their parents ate differently when they were younger.

Jonathan who lived in downtown Brooklyn from a Puerto Rican decent said that his mother hates the way he eats and thinks that he lives off of fast food and whenever she can, she will come over and cook him dinner. I then asked him what were the normal proportion sizes and he said "Since I'm a guy the proportions are huge"
Rebecca who's family is from India said that she doesn't really like the taste of fast food since she grew up on home cooking. She occasionally does order out because she simply doesn't feel like cooking. I also asked her what were the normal proportion sizes and she said " I don't really have a big appetite so I take a little of everything" When I asked my grandmother (she use to live down south) if she ate or prepared her food differently when she was a child she said she ate healthier and more often. They grew they're fruits and vegetables and raised the animals on the farm "we had duties around the house of what to do, one day my brother would kill and prepare the kitchen and I would take the corn off of the stalk and clean it"  She also added that I don't know what real food taste like because all the food we eat today has so many chemicals in it.

I also believe that depending on economic class food is thought of with higher value. I think that people who are more wealthy waste food more then people who are of middle or low class. Instead of saving a meal that they didn't finish they would throw it away, but one who is of middle or low class would save the food for another meal. No this doesn't apply to all high class and middle class citizens but in my opinion it applies to most.

Picture of my fridge

My mom works at a school, when there's left over milk they throw out but my mom takes it home so that it doesn't go to waste. We also don't go food shopping we just buy what we need when we need it, my mom and I think its better because things go to waste and spoil faster if you buy to many things at once

Food-Fast Food/Green Market

Differences and similarities between the two locations?

Mcdonald's was full of busy people, rushing trying to have a quick fast meal, many didn't look to happy and was just focused on getting their food and leaving. There was mostly minorities, casual. We asked a few people why they come some said its "cheap and fast" and others came because they had the munchies. Some seemed to cranky to even answer our questions, but for the most part it was a very busy atmosphere. The food market on the other hand was more calm and laid back, they're was more white people at the market then at Mcds. The owners of some of the stands said that they're food/wine was farmed locally with no chemicals. There were people around who were in a rush, but didn't seem cranky. There was a sign that said they accept EBT cards and the prices were cheaper then mcds.

Some reasons fast food is so successful.

Advertisment, I think since fast food is advertised so well causes it to become so secessful. Also they ingredients of the food, something that we all seem to like a lot. Somehow they manage to make something or put something in the food that a lot of people like. Also its cheaper and easy to get, all the healthier food that's available is more expensive  then lets say a cheese burger from Wendy. People don't have to prepare it, its already made ready for them to eat.

How is fast food responding to the sort of health-consciousness that the Greenmarket represents, and what do you think about it?

They're trying to be more healthy or at least seem more healthy. For example mcds has the calories besides the food and so does subways. Most people dont even pay attention to it, some people are conscious about what they eat and some people arent.

From our class discussion today (9/23/10) I learned that depending on your ethnic background you may eat differently. Yukki said that in Japan the proportions are smaller and even said that his mother mostly eats rice vegetables and soup with rice and vegetables in it. Also Jay said that in his family which is of a Irish background they mostly ate meat and potatoes. In America different ethnicity's are perceived differently then they actually are, some have a closed minded idea of what the cuisines are for certain backgrounds. For example if you ask someone in the street what they consider Mexican food they might say chipotle, taco bell or simply a burrito which isn't the case. I also think that America is basically ran by fast food its all most americans seem to eat

Food- Initial Thought

Is food sacred (and what does that mean)?

In my opinion yes it is but depending on a persons definition of "sacred" one would disagree. I think sacred means importance or something that has value. Food is a necessity its what our bodies need to survive, its valued and desired. Unlike money, I don't think money is sacred because it isn't a necessity it only has value because we give it value. I also think that food should be free since we need it to live, its essential but yet people die from starvation all the time. Since most people believe that money makes the world go round its ranked above food. Everyone is worried about getting a profit which is why many foundations towards ending world hunger are corrupt.

What are your priorities in food and what do you think of those priorities?

I don't really have priorities in food, I just eat when I'm hungry or sometimes bored. Some people do based they're choice in food on emotions, one person may feel sad one day a crave ice cream or chocolate. I think that food is just straight forward topic. We need it to live and it taste good.Even though its a necessity we have to pay for it.
